In a new step some Iranian journalists, including Ali Rizvani, have been sanctioned by the West. Before this, Individuals related to military and, nuclear activities and senior officials have been targeted as smart sanctions,, but the recent decision of the US Treasury Department, the EU and Canada to sanction Iranian journalists has opened a new debate in international human rights.
In this research, the basics of international protection for journalists, whether independent or governmental are evaluated in the framework of human rights; then the basics of sanctions against Ali Rizvani and its legitimacy are studied according to his measures. It seems that this journalist's actions cannot be categorized as "gross and systematic violation" of human rights. On the other hand, the prohibition of countermeasures against human rights and the teachings of the theory of labeling challenge the legitimacy of the imposed sanctions. The results of the research show that these sanctions are not only in conflict with the fundamental human rights of individuals, but also inconsistent with the the main task of a journalist that is in the realm of freedom of information.
